How do you know if you’ve ever been in love? For me, falling in love with someone is a decision made based on the successful matching of ones own predetermined criteria or preferences.

I fondly refer to the preliminary stage of partner selection as the ‘terminator glasses’ phase, since it filters through a potential mate’s attributes and matches them off against our own unique preferences.

MATCH. Hair: Short dark brown. MATCH. Complexion: Dark olive. MATCH. Lips: Plump. MATCH. Eyes: Big, brown, expressive, with long thick lashes. MATCH! Stance: Gentle, not cocky.

With the terminator glasses still firmly planted on my face, the confirmed Brazilian was permitted to move onto the second part of phase one: interaction. Stage two, ‘the rose coloured glasses’ phase, is extremely dangerous and not usually approached with caution by either candidate. Depending on the impact of stage one, bombs warning ‘relationship doom’ could be dropped right in front of ones eyes, yet getting let go un-noticed. The premature ‘I love you‘ could escape ones mouth, falling like a ball onto a roulette table. Declaring the title of stage three is difficult. Love and commitment gets swapped with fear and dependence. My argument is that they were never in love in the first place. One of my favourite movies, ‘Moulin Rouge’, melodically states, “The greatest thing you will ever learn, is just to love, and be loved in return”. So romantic love is conditional love. If romantic love only goes one-way, it is termed unrequited love or even ‘desperate’.

What if I said that true love can only be unconditional? What if love, real love, is just loving?

Early on men lusted and took their women. There was love also of course between some couples as we were born to love.

Firstly let’s explore love. What was the first love? How about a happy couple in love until the woman finds Mr. Right where she works. Women don’t lust like that do they?

Do you mean to tell me a great husband shows his wife the joy of sex, perhaps tempering his own lust to bring her to new heights, then she learns the meaning of lust and lusts for another? Are you saying love wears down? Now your mind really lets you catch fire. You read love poems. Are you in love? Maybe you are concerned about your lusty nature and tell yourself you won’t have sex for lust, just for love.

The odds are he lusted right away. No man does not want sex with a woman he likes even if he is not in love. There have been many a marriage based on good sex, and unravel later. After marriage this is more typical of men than before marriage. He will cling before marriage, but if not really in love he won’t cling too tight.

A clinging woman is sure trouble.
